More About The Sabbath
In those days I saw in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day in which they sold provisions. .16There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, who brought fish, and all manner of wares, and sold on the sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.17Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?18Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.19And it came to pass, that, when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and I set some of my servants at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.20So the merchants and sellers of all kind of wares lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.21Then I testified against them, and said to them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth they came no more on the sabbath.22And I commanded the Levites, that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy
.5And a certain man was there, who had an infirmity thirty and eight years.6When Jesus saw him lying, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith to him, Wilt thou be healed?7The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is agitated, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.8Jesus saith to him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.9And immediately the man was healed, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.10The Jews therefore said to him that was cured, it is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.11He answered them, He that healed me, the same said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk.12Then they asked him, What man is that who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?13And he that was healed knew not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.14Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said to him, Behold, thou art cured: sin no more, lest a worse thing come to thee.15The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.16And therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath.
